The Wisconsin Winter Plunge event is a way for any non-profit organization to raise funds for their cause, or for any team or individual to raise funds for the non-profit cause of their choosing.
In addition to being a powerful fundraising tool, it is also an excellent team building experience.
This year, the plunge will take place at Christy's Landing on Lake Waubesa on February 15th, 2020. Registration will begin at 12:00pm, and plunging will begin at 1:00pm. http://christyslanding.com/
Here's how to get involved:
- Form a plunge team for free on our website. Our website allows you to build a team page to describe the cause you are plunging for, set a monetary goal, and put up photos. Your team captain should register as an individual, and then create a team.
- Gather teammates! Each of your individual plungers also gets to build their own personal page with the same features.
- Share on social media. Plungers are able to share a link to their personal page on social media and ask their friends, family, co-workers, and acquaintances to sponsor their plunge financially. People who are not plunging, but still support your cause, can also share the plunge team link asking for people to sponsor the team's plunge. Email is also an effective sharing tool.
- PLUNGE! The event will be held at Christy's Landing on Lake Waubesa. There are heated changing tents available for plungers to dry off and change clothes in after they've completed their plunge. And of course, Christy's is open for food and drinks in celebration or preparation for the plunge.
Other important things to know:
Prior to the plunge, participants will receive a waiver via email, or via this link (http://bit.ly/PlungeWaiver) to print and sign and should bring this with them to the plunge in order to receive a wrist band identifying them as a registered plunger.
Plungers are required to wear shoes, and encouraged to dress up in costumes, matching team shirts, or whatever attire would be most fun for them. When you plunge, an announcer will tell the crowd who you are, what you are plunging for, and will read your "famous last words" aloud for you.
Our plunge coordinator is always happy to meet with any interested team to walk them through starting a team, registering plunge team participants, personalizing their plunge pages, or to answer any questions they might have about the day of the plunge.

What if the weather is too cold?
We will cancel the plunge if conditions are dangerously cold. We ask teams to complete community service hours in place of the plunge if this occurs.
What if the weather is too warm and the ice is unsafe?
We have a pool scheduled for plunging on land if necessary.

Is it safe?
You should certainly consider whether or not your body is in good shape for plunging. The cold water IS a shock to the system. However, if you are in good health, you should be able to enjoy the plunge. We have Oregon Fire & Rescue and Oregon's Dive Team on site to ensure a safe plunge. They sit at the edge of the plunge hole in their dive suits, within arms reach of participants. You are welcome to wear a life preserver if you wish. The water is usually about 4 feet deep, and there are stairs for an easy exit from the plunge hole.
Why does my receipt say that I donated to Oregon Band Boosters?
Oregon Band Boosters hosts the Wisconsin Winter Plunge. We are a 501c3 organization, so your donation is still considered charitable for tax purposes. At the end of the fundraising period for the plunge, we cut checks to the organizations to which each of you donated. We have asked our web host if there is any way to make your receipt reflect the team that you donated to, and unfortunately they do not have that capability. They can only reflect the host organization on your receipt.
How does the money work?
We cut a check to your organization of choice for 70% of what was raised. The remaining 30% goes toward the cost of putting on the plunge. No one working for the Wisconsin Winter Plunge is paid to do so. This is 100% volunteer run, and any excess funds go to the non-profit organization that our volunteers come from (Oregon Band Boosters.)
What are your overhead costs?
In the interest of putting as much money into the pockets of organizations doing good in our communities as possible, we keep our overhead costs very low. Much of what happens on the day of the plunge is donated by generous companies like Christy's Landing. We pay for heated tent rental, our website, flyers and waivers, wristbands for registered plungers, and safety items (such as the plunge platform, stairs, hazard fencing, and carpet to cover the ice walkway). The biggest expenses we incur are credit card fees, but donors also have the option to cover these fees themselves.
How much can I expect to raise?
In 2015, we had 3 plunge teams. Together we raised $13,917 for our causes, or an average of $186 per plunger.
In 2016, we had 6 plunge teams. Together we raised $26,952 for our causes, or an average of $217 per plunger.
In 2017, we had 9 plunge teams. Together we raised $30,443 for our causes, or an average of $241 per plunger.
In 2018, we had 7 plunge teams. Together we raised $45,350 for our causes. We averaged $360 per plunger.
In 2019, we had 9 plunge teams. Together we raised $33,615 for our causes. We averaged $311 per plunger.
In total, the Wisconsin Winter Plunge has raised $150,267 for non-profits in 5 years!
